How would microbial production of reduced compounds contribute to keep the repository host rock reduced? Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has studied redox buffer capacity of the water-rock (organics)-microbes interaction. In this paper, the results of water-rock (organics)-microbes interaction in the subsurface environment around Tono area to assess microbial effect on redox condition were presented.

In this presentation, regarding the mitigation of cavitation erosion being a significant issue in the development of the J-PARC mercury target, we talk about a variety of computational approaches that we have used to investigate it and a numerical result for the effect of gas bubble injection on cavitation inception in liquid mercury.

A new theoretical study on the separation of TRUs by the multi stage counter current extraction from the spent molten salt of the metal puro-process was performed. The effects of the scrub stage was studied. It was found that up to 4 stages of extraction, the decontamination coefficient(DF) became higher for those without the scrub stage. It was also found that DF becomes higher when the concentration of TRU in the spent salt is higher and it is difficult to separate Np, Am, and Cm from Pu with 4 stages of extraction.

A basic verification plan has been developed to assess the applicability of the COMPASS code to basic phenomena of heat transfer, dynamic flow, phase change etc. which are involved in complex phenomena in core disruptive accidents of fast reactors. The subsequent integral verification plan has also been defined with considering appropriate existing tests for the code verification as well as with extracting several issues on present core disruptive accident analyses.

Heating nuclides, platinum group metals and actinides are removed from high level waste (HLW) by Partitioning-Transmutation (P-T) technology. The remaining HLW are vitrified into glass waste form as conventional HLW. Since heat of this glass waste are largely reduced comparing with conventional glass waste, we investigate the possibility to emplace compactly in a large tunnel as supposed for TRU wastes.

It was suggested by the authors that electromagnetic method could detect irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) of austenitic stainless steel in advance of crack initiation. Authors investigated the mechanism using mock specimens of radiation induced segregation (RIS). SCC susceptibility and electromagnetic properties of the mock specimens were studied. Results were compared with the data of irradiated specimens and mechanism of electromagnetic diagnosis were discussed. A sensor system will be developed by application of these mechanism.
